I was one of two features earlier at Soft Exposure, held on the second and fourth week of the month at Infusion Team in College Park, a really nice little neighborhood outside of Downtown Orlando. When I first walked in, I thought oh shit, I don’t think I can swear in this venue. I talked with the host and she said as long as children weren’t around, I would be fine. I did censor myself a little just in case and it worked out really well.
My set was loosely based on Earth Day, and I justified it a bit with the banter (or my meta banter where I bantered about needing to be better at banter). Here it is below:
1. Would You Like To Take A Survey
2. Track & Field
3. Contest
4. Tailor Made
5. love me/not
6. A Letter From The Department of Health
7. Last Exit To Garageland
I was very well received, despite almost hitting my head on the light behind me several times (the ceiling lights are low and the lampshades are thankfully plastic). Afterward, the open mic was really honest, raw, things you miss sometimes at a poetry slam, especially Darlyn Finch and her set about her hospitalized brother. Soft Exposure is a really good open mic and Infusion Tea @ College Park has amazing tea and atmosphere.
Tomorrow (or dare I say later today), I will be in the New Poem Slam, featuring Kim Johnson from the Bay Area. The rules of the slam are simple: all poems performed must be never performed before at any other night. Broken Speech purchased satellite time from Sweden for five dollars so we know, trust me. Show’s at Stardust Video & Coffee, 1842 Winter Park Rd Orlando FL 32803 – $3 donation goes towards the feature and then Team Orlando 2009. Hope to see you there.
PS: The hyperlinked poems will lead you to their recorded versions. Please, take a listen.
